The Chief’s Diary: Civic Responsibility and Partnership with Kenema City Council Keeping the City Clean
There’s a team of about 300 youth and women in Kenema called “Youth in Action for Development Sierra Leone.” They are self organized to clean various streets in Kenema every day (it used to be somewhat irregular and then became weekly and now daily since my birthday wish for community service). They volunteer and are supported by a couple sponsors. They work closely with the Kenema City Council which sends a dump truck to collected gathered waste. These folks clean in areas and streets where City cleaners do not largely reach.
Speaking with Mr Umaru Fofana- their leader, I am very inspired at the ways in which they are organized and self motivated. Perhaps they can be supported into a private sector entity that does a JV with the Council or is supported by sponsors/indigenes of Kenema, or the very communities they clean. However it plays out, these determined youth and women make me believe that indeed together #WeAreDelivering.
