The Chief’s Diary: An Inspiring Coffee Farmer’s Story – from farm to cup
Coffee Couriers SL Ltd- a women-led coffee company founded by Hannah Elizabeth Tarawally is about to take its next step. Founded in 2014, Hannah has grown the company to support over 1,000 women coffee growers in Kenema, established women-led cooperatives in Kono, and leads in pioneering the cultivation of a special breed of coffee from Sierra Leone – Stenophylla. Her company grew in 2020, when it was supported by the Ministry of Trade through a World Bank initiative. Since then, she’s been getting support from various government actors, and development partners, especially the Ministry of Agriculture. Hannah and I met in 2022 and I’ve been inspired by her dedication and growth. Now, she’s about to open her own coffee shop at 17A Wilkinson Road.
It might be easy to point out challenges here and challenges there which might slow down your energy. But then I imagine strong women like Hannah. They are facing these challenges head on, empowering others and partnering with state and non-state actors along the way. It’s women line Hannah who embody the mantra “Together #WeAreDelivering.” Like Hannah’s Coffee Couriers, we have Nina’s Coffee (also woman-led), House of Beans and many other local brands. Hannah and they make me believe every day that together #WeWillDeliver a green, inclusive middle-income country by 2039.
